The Best Solution for a Rainy Night
Rain in this city usually does two things, show how bad our local driving etiquette and keep people indoors for the time water falls from the sky. It was the perfect time to have a punk show. Yucca played host to the Generators from California and the Tribulators making the trek up from Tucson plus our solid local bands.
Right at the top of it was Reason Unknown. These political punks warmed up the crowd. Travis and Pat sing lead vocals dependent on the song. They contribute to the great audience conversation between songs, although the No Gimmick dynamic with them is my favorite. Pat was all over, including at one point giving me a front row seat for a waterfall out of his mouth. These guys are so fun to watch, and are one of my favorite lyricists with their songs.
Right after them is the band competing for most talked about on this website, We Might Be Wasted. They play punk songs with humor and little nuances within the lyrics. They have a lot of fun up there while they do it too. Last night was the third time I’ve noticed to just watch Gus mess with Dan while he plays. I’ve said it before, but I will say it again, We Might Be Wasted is one of the most fun bands to watch.
Of course, I follow that up with the super entertaining band of 80D. Jesse, lead vocals, was all over Yucca last night. He was going down stirring up the pit, and just singing from different parts of the bar. Their entire band is full of energy, playing what I describe as a hard punk sound with regular punk vocals over it. It’s been a couple months since I last saw 80D, but they are a band to seek out when they are playing shows.
Following them in the night, was the Tribulators who, in addition, there has been a little gap since I last saw them play up here. One thing, Jimmy, vocals, has to be one of the tallest musicians I’ve seen perform on a stage. They brought the harder and faster punk style to our night and it’s a lot of fun. One of the few bands I found myself in and out of the pit. I hope it isn’t too long before I see them again, or maybe I’ll make the drive down to Tucson one of these days for a show once more.
Our headliner, The Generators, was not to be beat on the energy front keeping up with all the excellent bands before them. Between roots in some other great punk bands such as Schleprock, and this being the second time catching them, I knew I was in for a treat. Doug was all over that stage, leaning out to the crowd and getting them involved. Certainly some of the most fun in the pit was during their set. The Generators were cool enough to do an encore extending this great night of music. I don’t know if there was any better way to spend my time indoors while it rained this Saturday night.
